Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream Commercial Description:

The Call for Fall

“The distant drums of change are thumping, signaling the coming of chilling frosts, falling leaves and ghoulish screams. In a patch ripe with orange glow, Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream awakens and unleashes his season-stirring call for fall. His revelers listen for his echo across the ripened dancing days and prepare their seasonal celebration of harvest and ale.”

Wilhelm Scream is ripe with fall flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramel malts. Medium-bodied and the color of orange setting suns, it finishes similar to the way we finish summer: with just a hint of bitterness.

Malts: Pale, Victory, Caramel 80L, Caramel 120L
Hops: Apollo, Nugget
Additions: Pumpkin, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Allspice

Brewed by:
Magic Hat Brewing Company
Vermont, United States

Style: Pumpkin Ale
ABV:  5.40%

As a graphic designer, I am a sucker for a good package design. And I love so much about Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream. I love the description Magic Hat gave the beer, the crisp, sensory adjectives. I love the website for the beer with its deep reds and vibrant oranges. I love the design of the label with the screaming pumpkin…I love that it’s named after Wilhelm Scream, the inside joke of many famous movies. I want this beer to be so good.

And yet, I find, Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream falls slightly flat when it comes to the beer itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good. But it’s just not great. The beer contains spicy notes with a dark amber colored head. A citrusy taste compliments a small linger of flavor at the end.

Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream is a good beer. I could purchase a six-pack on the way to a party and slam all six, and not think much of it. But I wanted this beer to be so much more.
