Up until about 2 years ago, I had never visited a haunted house/attraction. In my life. Ever.

This may not be surprising for a normal person, but most who know me know me to be a huge horror movie fan. I grew up renting The Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller VHS tape from Easy Video over and over and over again. I loved those zombies.

In high school I would spend hours in my bedroom watching endless Friday the 13th marathons. My favorite movie is always Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

So why no haunted houses?

Those who know me also know I am very, very particular about who I let into my bubble. I wasn’t about to plunk down thirty bucks or whatever the cost of a ticket was, just to be grabbed and pushed around! I don’t want strangers touching me! Additionally I am not a fan of being startled. So I avoid haunted houses like the plague…until I had no choice.

I was headed to Disney World with my girlfriend to visit best friend and local author Stevie, who happens to love haunted houses, And we were headed there during the first week of October.

We were signed up for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. I was legitimately scared.

That day, we entered Universal Studios early. I read on my phone in my Kindle app for most of the day while my girlfriend and friends rode the roller coasters (I am afraid of roller coasters). Finally, night rolled around. Everyone without a Halloween Horror Nights ticket was kicked out, and that left us.

We somehow found ourselves in the middle of some strange one hour window where those who did not attend Universal Studios during the day were shut out, and that literally left hardly anyone in the park who had been there during the day that had paid for both day and night tickets. So naturally, the long lines I had been warned about were nonexistant.

The first haunted house we approached was based on the Alien franchise. My palms were clammy in the hot Florida night air as we approached and snaked our way through the line guides.

And we entered.

It wasn’t that bad.

Actually, it was kind of cool.

Strobe lights and men in masks jumping out of corners and things hanging from the ceiling and a constant stream of people ahead and behind you so you are not alone, and security employees every once in a while making sure no one was freaking out.

I discovered my greatest fear, that strangers would be grabbing me, never happens inside of a haunted house. And it wasn’t that scary. Employees only popped out every couple of people filing through. This meant every single scare wasn’t just for you.

After completing this haunted house, we went through The Walking Dead, Halloween, Killer Clowns, Dolls and Cannibals haunted houses. We only skipped one, because at that point my feet were falling off.

Fast forward a couple weeks- we arrived home, we agreed to go to Sleepy Hollow with a good friend and go through the haunted house. We arrive in Sleepy Hollow.

And while I was not expecting a done up charade on soundstages like we experienced in Universal Studios, I was hoping for something cool.

It just…wasn’t.

In fact, the town itself was like a giant tourist trap. There was nothing there, except the couple of overpriced Halloween attractions for those from out of town.

The moral of the story is, don’t go see something done by the best in the profession, the follow it two weeks later with some local kids in a hay field.

New Holland Ichabod Pumpkin Ale has both a cinnamon nutmeg aroma and taste. The body of the beer itself is clear golden brown, with little carbonation. New Holland Ichabod Pumpkin Ale possesses a pleasant refreshing mouthfeel. A very smooth and refreshing beer!
